But aesthetics isn’t the only advantage they have over metal amalgam fillings! Materials like porcelain and resin can also be more comfortable and better for your dental health in the long run. Here are just a few reasons (besides the obvious) to consider opting for a tooth-colored filling.

More Conservative

Before your dentist actually fills your cavity, they’ll likely need to prep the affected tooth by smoothing it out and shaving it down a little. While your dentist would prefer to not remove any amount of enamel, it’s often necessary for making sure the filling will mold into the cavity properly.

Tooth-colored materials bond more seamlessly with natural tooth structure, basically meaning that your dentist will have to do less drilling than they would for a metal amalgam filling.

Less Damage

When exposed to extreme heat or cold, metal has the tendency to expand and contract, respectively. This is called “thermal expansion,” and it can damage amalgam fillings just as much as other metals. If you frequently eat hot or cold foods, a gold or silver restoration could very well chip, crack, or come loose – not to mention result in some discomfort!

Tooth-colored materials, meanwhile, will stay the exact same size no matter what temperature they come into contact with.

No More Sensitivity

Another thing about metal is that it’s an excellent conductor of heat – which isn’t necessarily a good thing for your teeth. Basically, metal magnifies hot and cold temperatures, meaning if you chomp down on a piping hot steak or sink your teeth into some ice cream, you’re more likely to feel the sting as the sensation gets transferred to your dental nerves.

A tooth-colored filling will be more resistant to temperature, so you won’t experience sensitivity as a result of your restoration.

Wanting a more seamless appearance for your smile is a perfectly valid reason to get a tooth-colored filling instead of a metal one. But it’s good to know that you’ll benefit in more practical ways as well!

About the Author

Dr. Hannah Burton is an OSU graduate who diligently keeps her dental skills sharp through continuing education opportunities.
